So how much will it cost? The big question...
Lets consider this scenario because it's quite common... Joe Client gets two quotes for a website of about 100 pages. A few of the pages are dynamic, and require some programming and database work. He receives a quote from "Frank's Really Cool Websites" and a quote from us. The quote from Frank's was $30,000. The quote from us was $9,000. What? How could this be? Well, it's really quite simple.
Since most web designers are just web designers, they approach a project from the perspective of "How long will it take me to build 100 web pages and put in all the content?" In this case a few hours per page @ $85 per hour, you can do the math here and see how they get to $30,000.
We look at it differently. We find solutions that will speed up the development process. In this case, we built a couple of page templates and programmed each one to allow Joe Client to insert his own content (pictures and text) into the page. Then we make a hundred copies of the template and let him do all the work. The website page content is essentially built by Joe, and we spent less than 100 hours designing and programming the site (most of that was programming time, actually).
Bonus!!! By programming the site for Joe to be able to make changes himself, he also saves in long term, because he doesn't have to call us whenever he needs to change something up. As they say in that funny beer commercial, "Brilliant!"
Note: This actually happened to one of our recent clients – with these numbers. And it played out exactly as we have described.
